Elementary Level Program (K-5)

The BJDS applies its expertise in child development, learning, teaching and curriculum to open up many worlds to our students. We open the world of literacy in many domains: literature, science, numeracy, art, music and technology. We open the world of American culture, values, and history. We open the world of our Jewish heritage, including the Hebrew language, prayer, ethics, ancient and contemporary Jewish texts, Israel, and holidays. We open the world of physical and emotional health and self-awareness. We strive to adapt the best pedagogical theories, models and curricula to give our students access to all of these worlds.

BJDS is a school in progress. We constantly seek better ways to help each member of our community to grow and develop. We recognize the times we live in as challenging and accept our responsibility to help one another meet these challenges using the strengths of our American and Jewish heritage. The American Jewish community is unique in the history of Judaism for its opportunities, freedoms, choices and distractions. We direct our efforts to support students in their continued learning and contribution to the multiple communities in which they live.

The personal journey towards being true to oneself is interdependent with one's life within the community. Therefore, BJDS aims to provide an educational environment that exemplifies community belonging. Further, these habits will also contribute to the development of the individual's unique being while providing a vehicle to shape and transform the larger social society.

These values represent the basic underpinnings of our school while also directing our vision and inspiring our work:

  • Respect for the dignity and worth of ourselves and others

  • Habits of community belonging

  • Lifelong learning

  • Integrity

  • Integration
